Fireflies
The sun sank deeper, I could barely see any lights coming through the leaves. You wouldn't see the sunset here on this family farm.
I was sitting at the porch waiting for the night to arrive. Occasionally, you could hear geckos calling for each other from different coconut trees. I hope they wouldn't go any near the house for they were quite loud.
It had been two months now since our return to Davao. I feel like our life is hung in the balance, uncertain of what to come. I will be returning to work soon and I'm concerned of my wife's mental health.
Would she be able to endure all these struggles alone here?
I could see flickering lights of fireflies coming from the thick bushes under the big tree. It's rare to be able to see fireflies these days but they do appear frequently here on this farm.
The universe would create a balance. Some things were taken away from you, but you would be blessed with other things as well in life.
I realise even when things are tough like now, I could still find some peace in the beautiful things around me on this farm, the sounds of birds chirping in the morning, the feel of morning dew on the grass grazing my knees as I took the cows to open pasture across the creek, fresh air in the morning, cold breeze coming into the house and the flickering lights of the fireflies after dark.
All these moments will one day pass. I'll just have to be thankful and make the most of each day, one day at a time.
